Fuzztones: NYC

The Fuzztones came out of the New York underground scene in the early ‘80s sporting a garage-like rock sound. The band released their first album titled Lysergic Emanations in 1985, before original member Rudi Protrudi moved to Los Angeles in 1987 breaking up the band in the process but starting fresh with all new members. More line-up changes and several albums later bring us to the band’s current line-up of Rudi Protrudi (lead vocals, harp, guitar, vocals), Lana Loveland (organ, piano, vocals) and Marco Rivagli (drums, vocals).

On their latest alum titled NYC, the band pays homage to their New York City roots by delving into fifteen cover tracks from a variety of New York artists and bands beginning with “New York, New York” made famous by Frank Sinatra. The band give it a heavier sound, starting with the wailing of sirens before the drums and guitar take it up a notch. I hear an early Kinks influence, definitely has a ‘60s rock and roll swagger. The Wayne County penned “Flip Your Wig” is another barn burner where the catchy riffs and organ take me back to early Stranglers territory. The Cramps’ “New Kind Of Kick” is fuzzed up with a wavering distortion on the guitar while The Ramones’ “53rd & 3rd” is a super catchy slice of pop rock.

Another favourite is the somewhat darker “Psilocybe” where the organ adds more pleasing textures, touching on ‘60s/’70s psychedelia.

There is a homemade quality to this music and yes, take that as a complement. Anyone who appreciates punk and/or garage rock wrapped in deliciously catchy melodies should really search this one out. Click on the link below and listen for yourself.
