The Age of Ore: Trying Times

Upon receiving The Age of Ore's debut EP and examining the included press packet I was startled to see that this band is composed of a trio of youngsters aged from 13 to 16. That's pretty damn impressive, especially considering when I was that age my friends and I started a band and we could barely play "Polly Wolly Doodle" without flubbing it up. So, huge ups to the boys in Age of Ore for having the drive and starting a metal band at such a young age.

AoO play a somewhat sludgy brand of traditional metal, and their influences of Black Sabbath, Dio, and Alice in Chains ring true. Opening track "Deadline" is a slow, thundering track of Sabbathy sludge, and the title track is immediately reminiscent of the more intense moments of Dio's "Don't Talk to Strangers". Pretty nifty stuff.

For kids so young, the individual performances are impressive. The guitar work is particularly good and even features some impressive lead work. The rhythm section has it's moments where it loses it's footing and tempo becomes a bit of a struggle, but I can't in good conscience complain about something like that when the musicians themselves can't even drive yet.

I see this EP as more a flag in the ground mission statement than something I would probably come back and listen to on the regular. An incredibly young band like this that are influenced by the mighty metal gods of yore in and of itself is largely a triumph and I look forward to seeing what they can come up with next.
