Wig Wam: Never Say Die

When Norway's Wig Wam went on hiatus in 2014 it's probably fair to say that the rock world produced a collective shrug at best. Given the utter magnificence of their first two albums this was very much a sad end to their career one might have thought. I even changed my ringtone which had been 'Bless the Night' for years and promptly didn't give them a thought for ages.

I vaguely noticed that the band had reformed, watched the video for "Never Say Die", enjoyed it then promptly forgot about them again. Big mistake! Never Say Die is a brilliant comeback album, richly rewarding repeated listening and real jam-packed with the king of muscular melodic rock which Wig Wam made their reputation. At times they even creep towards heavy metal but always super tuneful. I really don't know where to start at the poptastic wonder of this album, maybe with "Dirty Little Secret" which has echoes of fellow Scandi's The Hellacopters in the keyboards, perchance the wonderful ballad "My Kaleidoscope Ark" which has permeated my brain such I got the album? The instrumental "Northbound" harks back to the days when guitarists could show off their stuff on a dedicated track on each album and like the rest of Never Say Die, it's fantastic.
