King, Shirley: Blues For A King

Shirley King, daughter of blues legend B.B. King, started her foray into the blues in 1990 and released her debut album titled Jump Through My Keyhole in 1992, followed by Daughter of the Blues in 1998. Her new album is titled Blues For A King and if you like the blues this will surely hit the spot.

The vocals and guitar are particular outstanding in the album’s thirteen tracks, most of them covers. The album begins with “All My Lovin’”, a slow grooving blues tune, very old school with a ‘60s retro vibe invoking the feeling of nostalgia and well being. The picked guitar lines courtesy of Joe Louis Walker are simple superb. The Traffic tune “Feelin’ Alright?” is brimming with soul, mostly due to King’s gritty delivery. The guitar has a stabbing intensity, and the solo has just the right amount of bite. Elvin Bishop guests on “I Did You Wrong”, adding bursts of bluesy guitar and gritty soloing. Another Traffic song comes in the form of the classic “Can’t Find My Way Home” featuring beautiful acoustic and electric guitar. The blues ballad “Johnny Porter” is another showpiece showcasing some great vocals by King and Authur Adams.

Blues For A King is an album that deserves to be heard, not just because Shirley is the daughter of one of the greats, but she has forged her own path forward, putting her soul into the music, something not everyone is able to achieve.
