Paranoid 偏執症者: Out Raising Hell

Something has definitely changed in the world of the Paranoid, this Japanese monikered, but Swedish born outfit previously hitting us with a hardcore-punk smash. Here, however, with Out Raising Hell, a much more vintage blast of metal comes to the fore, with forging forces such as Venom and Hellhammer now brought to mind. That said, the band haven’t completely moved away from their previous domain, even if there are not many hardcore flavours to be found in the likes of “Kaimei Seiryoku” or “Mada Minu Satsurikusya”. What is now crafted, however, hammers home with real conviction and authenticity, the grind of guitars that forces its way through your brain during “Hakaba no Me” digging a deep ravine into your subconscious.

With a gritty but pleasingly clear sound allowing all of the different aspects at play here to shine through, the darkness and brutality comes with a genuine threat but also the willingness to surprise by building grooves and hooks. Add in some guitar solos that really stab through the maelstrom and the overall effect is engaging, while still being putrid enough to keep a threatening air. Add in that vocally, the rasps and growls remain clear, if full force, and the amalgam of style and aggression hits the mark in a thoroughly believable way. That’s key here, from the artwork - which is more than a little cool - to the Japanese themes (from band and song names (which appear to be pretty SoT software unfriendly) to imagery, it definitely feels as though Paranoid don’t do anything by halves. The results are an album that I maybe wasn’t quite expecting but one which, nonetheless, has rewards aplenty to explore.
