Soilwork: A Whisp Of The Atlantic

Sweden’s Soilwork has released a new ambitious 5 track EP entitled, A Whisp Of The Atlantic (Metal Blade Records). It features the opening and title track clocking in at over 16 minutes long, to really make this an extended play effort.

Soilwork have been pushing their musical envelope for years now, constantly treading down new territory, so why would this EP be any different? The song, “A Whisp Of The Atlantic” is a bold and immersive undertaking and it works. Beautiful melodies, clean vocals and even trumpet shouts are interwoven around classic Soilwork 'Melodic Death Metal' riffing and blast beats. There are a multitude of mesmerizing tempo changes, performances and compositional ideas that you might not see coming from these Swedes and that is an excellent surprise. I believe this might be a case of a 'side band' influencing the main band. Soilwork’s musical exploration is a vast one here and they crush it. This is a 16 minute ride that you’ll want to take over and over.

The remaining four songs on A Whisp Of The Atlantic are much shorter and very guitar riff driven, with the modern day Soilwork formula, than the older Figure Number Five days. Bjorn “Speed” Strid’s vocals are just perfect and he seems to be getting better with age, while the rest of the band are firing on all cylinders, as well. “Feverish” shows the band has a 'Symphonic' side and “Desperado” hammers home some good old double bass drumming with a heavy and frantic guitar chugging.

Soilwork have released a great 'tease' of an EP with A Whisp Of The Atlantic, to end 2020 and have once again shown that they can continue to grow as songwriters, while maintaining their core sound and vibe. They have a great blend of the old & the new on this EP and if you’ve been a Soilwork fan over the years, you’ll find something to sink your 'Metal Teeth' into on this EP.
