Lowrider: Refractions

Bring on the fuzz!

That is the signature statement from Sweden’s Lowrider, a powerful stoner rock band that I have recently been acquainted with. They released their debut album titled Ode To Io in 2000 and then for reasons not apparent to me took nineteen years to release their sophomore effort titled Refractions. From what I have the read the band still played live sporadically during that time and we should all be grateful they decided to drop another platter because it is indeed a fabulous assault on the senses, taking the American classic desert/stoner sound to new levels.

Refractions is all about the riff and let me tell you every track is soaked in outstanding guitar work. Thick, fuzzy, semi clean, catchy, dynamic…I could go on. Suffice it to say this is some of the best rock music I have heard this year. A pulsating groove begins the first track “Red River”, a huge slice of thick guitar riffs, ripping solos, all dosed in a high degree of melody. The music eventually succumbs to a quieter mood before the heaviness is unleashed again, making for a highly dramatic statement. More great guitar sounds added with screaming Hammond organ highlights the excellent “Ode To Ganymede”, where the bone shattering riffs will leave you breathless. The deadpan vocal delivery, awesome groove and trippy jamming makes “Sernanders Krog” another great track. The huge fuzz and distant sounding vocals gives “Sun Devil/M87” a cool vibe before the album ending epic “Pipe Rider” offers the best guitar work on the album diverting from atmospheric moodiness to intense riffing all the while offering one of the catchiest and head sticking melodies on the disc.

Excellent lead vocals, bottom end and riffs makes Refractions a stellar second effort from a band that deserves to be heard by all fans who appreciate rock music served with conviction and a whole lotta soul.

Another highly recommended offering courtesy of Blues Funeral Recordings.
