Arnold, Harvey Dalton: Stories To Live Up To

If you are a fan of the classic southern rock band The Outlaws (formed in 1967) you may be familiar with the music of Harvey Dalton Arnold as he was a member of the band from 1976 to 1980 and played on three albums. On his new album titled Stories To Live Up To, Arnold (vocals, guitar) has surrounded himself with some great players:

Zev Katz (bass)
Charley Drayton (drums)
Rob Arthur (piano, Rhodes, Hammond B3 organ, keyboards)
Zak Alister (rhythm guitar)

The album was recorded in the studio with all the band members in the same room, you know, actually playing their instruments together and their certainly is a ‘live’ feel to the album. I suppose the best way I can describe this music is it’s the real deal, very soulful and shall I say…human. This is some gritty stuff, blues influenced southern rock and R&B. Arnold has a soulful, road weary voice and is an excellent guitarist, weaving tasty solos throughout these nine tracks. And the rest of the band is as solid as they come. Lots of excellent tracks here like the bluesy rocker “Stay Here With Me”, the slower burning blues riffs in “Early Bird”, the true gritty blues of “When The Sun Goes Down” and the slower tempoed bluesy ballad “Poor Boy”.

There are no bad tracks here, every one is a solid winner. This is real music made by flesh and blood and a whole lotta soul. Very refreshing indeed.
