McKnight, Sandy: San Fernando Beat

Sandy McKnight is a name you may not be familiar with although he has been quite prolific over the years but has kind of flown beneath the radar. He is a sort of jack of all trades kind of guy (musician, songwriter, producer, teacher, media guy…the list goes on). On his new EP titled San Fernando Beat he has sought the help of L.A. session veteran Fernando Perdomo who has been very prolific in prog circles these last few years working most notable with Dave Kerzner. It would seem these two artists don’t share much in common, at least musically, but I have to say these six pop tunes are just pure melodic fun.

Six tracks with none over four minutes, the music is short and sweet and incredibly infectious pop. Beginning with the upbeat and catchy “Facing The End Of The World” followed by the slower ‘60s influenced pop of “Single Flowers” where McKnight has a slight Elvis Costello inflection in his vocals along with tasty guitar and keyboards, this album is as melodic and catchy as music gets these days. Each song features sing along choruses and feel good melodies like the jaunty “Chloe’s Gone”, the psychedelic tinged “Heart In Your Hands” and the irresistibly catchy “Fake” which ends the disc in a decidedly charming way.

This album was a nice surprise and considering these dark days quite a little pick-me-up. Let’s hope this isn’t a one off and the two will collaborate again on what will hopefully be a full length effort. Recommended.
