Falset is generating a lot of early buzz because the drummer is Chance LaBrie -- son of Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie. But if curiosity draws you to this Canadian quartet that combines modern rock, metalcore and djent, Falset’s debut full-length album, We Follow or Lead the Way, might just hook you.
Yes, there are plenty of aggressive vocals and punk attitude (after all, these guys played the final Vans Warped Tour in 2018), and System of a Down, Linkin Park and Bring Me the Horizon influences weigh heavily. But the group LaBrie founded with two of his high school buddies also taps into his old man’s band, with obvious nods to drummer Mike Mangini and guitarist John Petrucci. Also worth noting is that We Follow or Lead the Way was mixed by Nolly Getgood (Haken’s Virus and Vector), who sonically elevates the album above many debut metal records.
Clean vocalist/lead guitarist Zach Copeland and screaming vocalist/guitarist Braeden Kozy display an impressive command of melody, especially on the rousing opener “Kingdom" and the moody title track. “Without a Trace” is a barnstormer that showcases Kozy’s angry delivery, while “9 Minute Drive” veers off in a more pop direction. The middle of the album, however, drags with “Rock Bottom,” “Hollow Saints” and “Dear Heaven Dear Hell” emerging as messier tracks.
Nevertheless, Falset deserves attention not only for avoiding the “Dream Theater Jr.” tag but also for making a record with broad appeal across the metal spectrum.
