Sancious, David: Eyes Wide Open

It's been a while since we've heard from original E-Street Band member David Sancious, a musician with immense talents on keyboards & guitar who has recorded sporadically during his long solo career but returns with this short 34-minute album Eyes Wide Open. Alongside Sancious for these eight tracks are drummers Will Calhoun, Adriano Molinari, Michael Bland, Joe Bonadio, and Vinnie Colaiuta, with the leader laying down all synths, organ, piano, guitars, and vocals. If you are looking for some of the fiery fusion that Sancious gave us on some of his earlier solo albums, better look elsewhere, as much of Eyes Wide Open is centered on funk and R&B styles littered with social/political lyrics and soundbites, pleasing synth tones, and the occasional tasty guitar solo, which you can hear up front on "If" along with David's strong vocals. "Flip It" might be the closest thing we get to vintage fusion era Sancious, a tasty instrumental with some biting blues rock solos and bouncy synths. "December" is a pleasant track, majestic keyboards & synths provide a nice backdrop for tender acoustic guitar solos, while "Eyes Wide Open" and "Urban Psalm #3" might not have sounded out of place on a classic Prince album, complete with funky R&B grooves and some blazing synth solos.

Definitely not essential David Sancious, but Eyes Wide Open is a fun listen that gives us all a glimpse of where this legendary musician has been at lately.
