IWKC: Evil Bear Boris

IWKC (I Will Kill Chita) is an eclectic instrumental progressive/art rock band based out of Moscow. So far I have reviewed two of the band’s albums, Hladikarna (2017) and Cargo Cult (2016). Next up is their 2015 album titled Evil Bear Boris.

As I have stated previously this Russian band makes adventurous rock music that defies to be pigeonholed. Progressive rock, art rock, jazz, electronic and other genres are rearranged and molded to form an unusual but extremely rewarding sound pallet. There are no guitars on this record but the strings, which include cello and violin are used quite effectively. Saxophone, tuba, French horn, trumpet and trombone also add a certain eclecticism to the band’s unorthodox sound.

The first track “Point Of No Return” is a twenty-three minute epic that twists and turns its way through many different genres. Progressive rock, jazz, electronic music and who knows what else is expertly crafted in what is a roller coaster ride of inventive rock music. It starts out sounding like a ‘60s detective serial before diverging into several different pathways all the while showcasing lush strings, excellent synths and keyboards and well placed horns. Moments of eclectic prog crop up, especially the cacophonic builds, ensuring the listener pay attention. “Alles Unter Kontrolle” is a moody and darker piece followed by “Ned Hoper” highlighted by some stellar synth solos. The sparsely electronic “Keine Rationale Erklärung” and the avant-garde-ish “The Music Will Play In Your House But You Won’t Hear It” where the builds reach chaotic heights demonstrate the variety of music on offer here.

IWKC is one of the more interesting bands from Russia and Evil Bear Boris is another fine release from a band that deserves more attention. Check it out by clicking on the link below.
