Hitherside: Blue Lotus

Here is another recent discovery from 2019. The band is Hitherside and have been around since 2011, forming in Antwerp, Belgium. Consisting of two members; American singer Jennifer Summer and Belgium multi-instrumentalist Sam Oerlemans, the duo released their sophomore effort titled Blue Lotus in March of last year.

The guitar riffs and the lead vocals are the main focus here as well they should be. Summer has a strong voice, with quite a varied approach and Oerlemans’ guitar work is vital to every track, whether it’s intense like in the catchy opener“Unsanctify Me” or laced with moody textures as in the compelling title track. More highlights include the burning guitar solo in “Get It Back” and the wall of sound riffs in the slightly dark moods of “Insignificant Others”.

Hitherside has produced a solid effort with Blue Lotus and should please alternative metal fans across the board.

A Painted Bass Records release.
