Deep Energy Orchestra: The Return

Deep Energy Orchestra is a project led by bassist extraordinaire Jason Everett. Their first album titled Playing With Fire was released in 2018 and is reviewed on this site. It is a fine album so I was quite looking forward to digging into their latest opus The Return. Most of the players from the first album return, plus the addition of Fareed Haque, a truly amazing guitarist. Really, the list of guest musicians is quite impressive.

As far as the music is concerned, be prepared to let it take you on a journey, one that is both thrilling and fulfilling. Like their last album, this is not your typical jazz, prog or world music album, it’s a combination of many different styles and moods ensuring boredom will not be a problem.

The first track “Moksha: The Elimination Of All Duality” is a four part piece almost running at close to seventeen minutes. It begins with “The Village”, a very exotic pilgrimage through the country of India. “The Battle” is more frenzied and harrowing, the acoustic guitar playing of Haque is superb here as he executes some mind-bending acrobatics that will have any guitar aficionado stand up and take notice. The third part “The Journey” features outstanding violin, percussion and bass, featuring the ethnic vocals of Ujwal Nagar. Again, the musicianship is very impressive. On the second track “Zyryab” Haque’s flamenco guitar will duly impress and on the moody “Call Of Kali” Trey Gunn’s Warr touch guitar should do the same.

Deep Energy orchestra have made an excellent second album with The Return. Easily recommended for fans of progressive rock and fusion.
