Not My God: Not My God

My most recent encounter with Shotgun Messiah, Marylin Manson, KMFDM man Tom Skold was decidedly underwhelming. His Skold album, Never Is Now being far too constrained for its own good. Now, with the enigmatically titled Not My God, Skold has teamed up with Psyclon Nine man Nero Bellum. The partnership should be one made in heaven - or maybe that should be hell? - but the reality of the matter is that Not My God seems to have been created to ape the Manson sound as it lifts from early Nine Inch Nails without much interest in adding a few grinding flavours of its own.

Right from the opening, lead single, “Fiction” the intention to follow a series of over used traits is unapologetically laid out and while there’s no denying the aggression and intended malice behind “Until The Pain Is Gone” and “Murder Suicide”, a confusingly tame production almost systematically removes any threat, surprise or danger from an album that looks to thrive on those very things. From “Decay Decay” to “Right Now”, through to “Nevermore” and “Cold Black”, the issues remain the same, as safe and expected ideas are shot down by the very thing meant to be building and bolstering them.

With a stronger set of songs it’s possible that these all too apparent issues could have been negated but in truth what’s been thrown out here needed a bold, proud, sound that bordered on being something evil and dirty to become what it never really threatens to achieve. That combination of brash but never captivating songs and a toothless, aimless production stymies any chance there was of Not My God from overcoming either of its all too obvious shortcomings.
