Little Fyodor: Pithy Romantic Ballads

This is some whacked out music. I am talking about Little Fyodor and his new EP and misadventure titled Pithy Romantic Ballads. This is the artist’s seventh studio album and the first I have heard. According to the press release some of his influences include The Buzzcocks, Pere Ubu, Frank Zappa, The Residents, John Lennon, Neil Young, Devo, Hawkwind, etc. I would also add early Stranglers to the list. It’s a diverse array of artists but whether his music equates to any or all of these will be matter of opinion. I certainly hear Zappa’s quirkiness in the music and lyrics as Fyodor’s weird sense of humour is injected into these eight, relatively short tracks. For a taste of his idiosyncratic nature you should at least listen to the album’s first track “Trump Loves You”. His tongue and cheek humour and sarcasm is certainly appreciated during these unprecedented times. While his somewhat maniacal vocals will be an acquired taste, I found this to be a pretty catchy track with a decent guitar solo added for good measure. The punky/retro new wavish sounding “Are You You” is another catchy tune with a hint of Pere Ubu. More retro keyboard sounds can be heard on “That Kids Still Here” and on the crazed urgent grooves of “Franksgiving”. The last track is the only one I didn’t like as it has no redeeming qualities what so ever. On a positive note, it’s only around a minute and a half, so there’s that.

With five songs under two minutes it’s a quick listen and to be honest, the sheer weirdness and bat crazy lyrics probably wouldn’t bode well in longer song structures. Pithy Romantic Ballads is still a fun listen and shouldn’t be taken too seriously.
