Transcendence: Nothing Is Cohesive

Although this is the 3rd CD by modern rockers Transcendence, Nothing Is Cohesive was my first exposure to them. The CD opens up with the Tubes meets Game Theory song "Somebody Killed The DJ". From that point forward, the CD follows a more David Bowie theme. The singing of Ed Hale often reminds me of Bowie. The song structure has an early Suede feel to it. To me the most "Bowie" moment occurs on the interesting remake of the Wings song "Tomorrow".

Although I make these generalizations, each song is unique and presents a different set of moods and attitudes. Some songs are pure guitar rock while others tend to be more keyboard oriented. The lyrics are fairly dark and tend to be quick hitting statements that together set the mood of the song. There are times the music doesn't quite keep up and over the 50+ minutes of this CD, there is a small, and I want to emphasize small, amount of fill. But that can be expected on anything as adventurous as Nothing Is Cohesive.

There is no doubting that Transcendence has been influenced by the Beatles, most bands are, but they do a good job of sounding fresh yet somehow familiar. Nothing Is Cohesive is recommended for a wide range of listeners, from 70s art-rock fans to 90s Radiohead to lovers of eclectic straight ahead rock-n-roll.
