Joe Mikolajunas Project: Defenders Of The Faith

The Joe Mikolajunas Project, led by, you guessed it, Joe Mikolajunas, has released his debut album Defenders Of The Faith. Joe is a pretty good guitar player, as he lays down some blistering lead work and heavy metallic riffs throughout these six tracks. This is a Christian themed album and Joe makes no bones about it as the religious message is pretty clear cut. There are no other musicians credited so one would assume this is a one man project although it does sound like there might be some added help with backing vocals.

The first track “Don’t Get Left Behind� is all squelching lead guitar and heavy riffs. Some might find the lyrics a little too preachy so if that’s a problem for you it’s best you stay away. The song boasts a pretty good vocal melody and catchy riffs but the drums could have had more of a presence, especially since this is a pretty heavy track. I suspect they are programmed but regardless they could certainly be turned up a notch. The title track starts a little slower but quickly fires on all cylinders with its speedy riffs and big bold chorus. The segue ways between verse and chorus could have been a bit smoother but overall I enjoyed this one. “Victory in Jesus� starts with slow, doomy riffs in the vein of Black Sabbath and then it’s another speedy riff fest until the doomy riffs return. The other three tracks are more of the same style of blistering metal.

This isn’t a bad album but it’s obvious this is a do it yourself release done on a low budget. I think with a little production help to smooth out the rough edges his next release would be a step up. Joe certainly has enough talent to make a convincing metal statement. We shall see…
