Xibalba: Años En Infierno

Nobody really knows exactly when an album should be released. Some bands get lucky and drop an album right when people need it. Others aren’t so lucky. Whatever people will say about Xibalba’s latest, there’s no denying its uncanny timing. This album appeared not only in the middle of a pandemic, but also right when the streets are filled with protestors demonstrating against police violence, racism, and inequality of all kinds. This is uncanny because Xibalba’s music has always focused on precisely these themes. Their music captures all the rage against injustice, racism, and violence that belongs to this cultural moment while also looking backward to centuries of human cruelty.

Xibalba is also one of the heaviest bands out there. I know I’ve said that about other bands, but Xibalba holds a special place for me. One of their old shirts was a jersey with a giant “0� on the back, just under the words NONE HEAVIER. Whether other bands could dispute that or not, there’s no denying that these guys are masters of the sound and style we can only call heavy. The guitars are central to the band’s sound. The riffs are low and fierce, nearly snarling with rage. The drums, likewise, are brutal and warlike, pounding away everything in their path. Let’s also not overlook Nate Rebolledo’s vocals. His rough delivery combines a death metal rasp with the aggression of hardcore punk. If you’re interested in this album, check out “La Injusticia� and “Años En Infierno.� If you like those, check out the two parts of “El Abismo.� They’re a tad more melancholy than the rest of the album, but they’re no less doomy.
