Beast of Revelation: The Ancient Ritual of Death

In the midst of an ongoing pandemic, you’d think that people would prefer listening to something comforting, not an album so crushing and so heavy that you feel its weight and power shifting from your speakers onto your shoulders. And yet, the music on this album is so good that it’s worth feeling a bit uncomfortable. What else do you expect from crushing death-doom anyway? Certainly not something peppy.

Even if you aren’t familiar with Beast of Revelation, you have probably heard of some of its members. John McEntee (Incantation) provides the rough, granular, vocals while A. J. van Drenth (Temple, ex-Beyond Belief) plays the guitar and bass and Bob Bagchus (Infidel Reich, ex-Asphyx) plays the drums. I suppose you could call Beast of Revelation a “supergroup,” but that wouldn’t be quite right. This is something more than that, at least I hope so. Supergroups often burn out before they really get going and I definitely want to hear more from Beast of Revelation. This is raw and unapologetic death-doom played to perfection.

The music is on this album is slow-paced death-doom played without fuss or fanfare. If you like this style of metal, this is essential listening. If you aren’t familiar with death-doom like this, imagine the music as the soundtrack for a monster slowly emerging from an unknown hole in the world. For those interested in checking out Beast of Revelation, check out “The Fallen Ones,” “Legions,” and “The Ancient Ritual of Death.” Some listeners might not like the ways the vocals occasionally sound like they’re lapping up the last bit of dreck from the ground. Try to look past that; those moments don’t last long. They’re just small reminders that this music comes from the darkest abyss. McEntee’s vocals are up there with the best of this style and his delivery suits this album perfectly. Highly recommended.
