Children Of The Sün: Flowers

Psychedelic and stoner rock has been in heavy rotation these last few years and this new Swedish band (new to me at least) Children Of The Sün has really caught my attention with what I believe is their debut full length album titled Flowers. This could also be considered an EP as it is only around thirty-four minutes in length but I have to say every minute is pure quality beginning with the album opening short instrumental “Flowers (Intro)” with its tasty psychedelic pop filled with melodic and jangly guitar, taking the listener back to 1967 or thereabouts, reveling in its Hippie-like nostalgia. A punchy groove and dramatic intro vocals really got my attention in the up-tempo “Her Game”. The searing guitar solo gives the track just enough bite. One of my favourite tracks has to be “Emmy” where organ and a fantastic vocal arrangement combine to form a trippy and slow moving psychedelic feast for the ears, almost ethereal at times but really quite powerful. Elements of folk and pop crop up as well. The lead and backing vocals are absolutely outstanding, easily an album highlight. The guitar work in “Hard Working Man” is a little more rocking with another excellent vocal arrangement. The acapella opening in “Sunchild” offers another major hook, in an album full of them.

Flowers is one of the best examples of psychedelic music I could hope to hear. It shouldn’t come as any surprise that Sweden has produced another excellent band. Absolutely recommended.
