Faint Signal began in 2011 as a result of a Craigslist post when Henri Eisenbaum replied to Randy Campbell’s post asking, “Is Prog Rock dead in Cincinnati?" Both multi-instrumentalists, they clicked immediately and began the quest of re-igniting the Prog Rock flames to become the only original Prog Rock band in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Thus begins the story of this enchanting musical collective, as told on its Bandcamp page. Cincinnati's gain is a bonus for the rest of us, too.
While Eisenbaum and Campbell handle most of the vocals and many of the instruments, an additional seven people contributed to Formula, which is Faint Signal’s follow-up release to its self-titled 2014 debut.
Landing somewhere between old-school Marillion and latter-day Spock’s Beard, Faint Signal also borrows from Genesis, Porcupine Tree, Transatlantic, The Flower Kings and even Pink Floyd while still managing to create a wholly fresh and majestic sound dominated by keyboards and insightful lyrics about a world in flux.
Standout tracks include album-opener “5000 Years” and “Linear Skies,” which both feature Katja Loeb on lead vocals, as well as the three-part suite “Groomed for Success.” That said, all 11 songs here deserve repeat spins.
