Sirkis and Bialas IQ: Our New Earth
Sirkis/Bialas IQ is the project of Polish vocalist Sylwia Bialas and her partner, Israeli drummer Asaf Sirkis. They released their debut album titled Come To Me in 2014 and have now followed it with Our New Earth (2019).
This is a rather nuanced effort, modern European jazz played with finesse although the band does let loose occasionally. The musicianship is outstanding with Frank Harrison (piano, keyboards) and Kevin Glasgow (six string electric bass) rounding out the quartet.
This is a two CD set with a total of eleven tracks beginning with “If Pegasus Had One Wing” which is initially quite dark and edgy before the wordless vocals add a bit of sunshine. The creative piano solo and drumming add to song’s complexity. Next is “Land Of Oblivion”, softly played and moody followed by “Letter To A.” where the band reach an invigorating crescendo with soaring vocals and fabulous drumming. ”Reminiscence” opens with a drum solo and Sirkis’ playing throughout is very good. The vocals, bass and piano on the atmospheric and moody “Rooting” showcases the band’s considerable talent as does Glasgow’s bass solo in the title track.
While this may be difficult listening for some, there is certainly an experimental nature to some tracks " the super trippy and unsettling “Spooky Action At A Distance” immediately comes to mind, the playing is exemplary and the album is really quite interesting. Recommended for music fans wanting to expand their listening horizons.
