Jirga is a 2018 film by Benjamin Gilmour. Music composed by AJ True. The story revolves around a man from Australia who returns to Afghanistan to seek forgiveness from the family he killed during the Afghan war. I have not yet seen it but the storyline does sound quite intriguing. Having not seen the film makes it hard to contrast the music with the picture but knowing the desert landscape of Afghanistan can be quite bleak and war torn, one can close their eyes and get transported to a different time and place. Vintage synths abound, but mostly used in an ambient setting so suffice to say this is a very mellow soundtrack. A few tracks feature the chanting vocals of Sher Alam Miskeen Ustad and this is where the world music elements filter through. Subtle and introspective is the name of the game here but that is not to say this music lacks depth, it will just depend on your perspective and tastes. There are twenty-five short pieces so describing individual tracks would be a rather fruitless endeavour. Really it’s about flow and calming moods, the guitar and synths in “Lost In The Desert” is a good example. The moody guitar work in “Arrival” is another decent track.
While this will not be for everyone, being drawn to ambient music is an obvious must, this might make more than a few late night listening sessions. Check out more information by clicking on the website below.
