Michael Moorcock & The Deep Fix: Live At The Terminal Café

Michael Moorcock is an English musician and science fiction/fantasy writer and I am sure glad to have made his acquaintance via his new album Live At The Terminal Café. I really had no idea what to expect from this one but when I read that he has been involved with the likes of Hawkwind and Blue Oyster Cult I took that as a big plus. Much to my surprise the music threw me for a loop as the sounds of Cajun, Americana, country and psychedelia blasted through my speakers.

The album is filled with cool chilled out sounds and is for the most part pretty mellow. The first track “The Effects Of Entropy” is a narrative piece (a bit like something Jim Morrison might have done) with touches of psychedelic and Cajun music. The guitar playing is wonderful here and throughout the disc, a real treat for sure. Old time country twang can be heard on “Terminal Café” while the fiddle and guitar work on “The Dream Of Eden” is stellar. Blues/swamp/Americana and psychedelic gives “Sam Oakenhurst’s Story” an addictive sound while the trippy narrative piece “The Heat Of The New Orleans Night” has some mellow but outstanding guitar work. Moorcock’s gravelly vocals and fiery guitar in the bluesy/Americana sounds of “A Man Like Me” and the country flavourings of “Mississippi Turn Round” are more highlights.

Moorcock and his Deep Fix band have put out an excellent album with Live At The Terminal Café. I think this will have crossover appeal for many fans of progressive and psychedelic music. Well worth checking out.
