O Zorn!: Your Killer

This is the debut album from a Long Beach, CA, band with enough experience in the underground scene that this could be their tenth release. For the purists out there, Your Killer is technically the band’s second album, but the first one was more of a local release, something that did not get wide circulation. But with Your Killer, the band is ready to introduce themselves to the world, and let me tell you, they make a solid first impression.

The band draws on a mixture of styles, but when listeners hear the heavy riffs and rough vocals, they’ll leave questions of genre behind and just soak up the music. From start to finish, the album simply makes for great listening. Fans of sludge-infused groove will definitely want to check out “Your Killer,� “Casket,� and “Secret Santa,� three of the best-written and best-performed songs on the album. If you want to search beyond that, check out tracks like “Cult Status� or “Ribeyes.� I don’t know if “Ribeyes� is about steak, but it has some of the meatiest riffing on the album.

If the album has a theme, it’s human suffering in its various forms. When the album came together, there was no way the band could have anticipated the international pandemic of 2020. But since human suffering is a given, the theme transcends our current crisis. Fortunately, O Zorn! is less interested in the bleakness of life and more interested in the riff, the groove, and the beat.
