Uneven Structure: Paragon

Uneven Structure is a progressive metal band hailing from France. In the band are Benoit Friedrich (bass), Igor Omodei (guitars), Matthieu Romarin (vocals) and Arnaud Verrier (drums). They released their debut album Februus in 2011, followed by La Partition (2017) and now have a new album titled Paragon (2019).

Having not heard anything previously I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect but call me pleasantly surprised. The band inject plenty of mellow and ambient moments in their metal, filled with deep grooved riffs and an excellent rhythm section. The first track “Magician� starts moody and soft, a little discordant as the guitar picks up speed and the drums pick up the groove. It builds in layers into a wall of sound that isn’t that far removed from something Devin Townsend might do. The vocals are clean and melodic and are a high point for me. “Hero� begins heavier almost having a techno effect on the guitar riff. It’s pretty heavy stuff with a nice mixture of clean and growled vocals. The soaring chorus in “Innocent� is one of the catchiest on the disc as the song traverses through heavy and mellow soundscapes. With the short instrumental “Caregiver� the drums come in heavy and loud with an almost robotic sound and leads into the riff drenched “Outlaw� where tricky syncopation and intense growls will have your head on a swivel.

I found Paragon to be a very good alternative prog metal album. Looking forward to hearing more of the band’s music. A Long Branch Records release.
