Uncle Roy’s Spaceship: How Do We Get To Earth?

I just recently discovered Uncle Roy (aka Roy Leonard Herman) who released two CDs in tandem last fall; Save The Universe and How Do We Get To Earth? Save The Universe earned a respectable three stars so let’s see how the next CD fares. Like his other album this too is a complete DIY project. Again, the production could have been better but on the plus side it is clear Roy’s heart is in the right place.

The disc begins with “Space Noodlein” and that’s pretty much what you get, lots of shredding guitar fireworks and an overall fast pace. The riffs at times reminded me of Rush, although much less refined than anything by that band. Next is “Moonbeams And The Cosmic Bang” which I like better, mainly because it flows better. Quite a dreamy and spacey track although it does get heavier half way through. With “There Is Nothing More Bright Than The Stars At Night” the vibe is more fusion, especially the guitar work. While Uncle Roy’s guitar is on fire here some of the transitions are a bit clunky. My favourite tune is the dream filled “It’s A Beautiful Day In The Milky Way”, the spacey acoustic guitar chords are especially pleasing on the ears. More space rock can be heard on the final track “Flight Of The Ancient Alien”, another pretty decent effort.

While there are moments of murkiness , I appreciate what Roy is doing here and he’s no doubt having some fun doing it. Check out the liner notes to see what I mean. Click on the link below to learn more.
