Disen Gage: Libertâge

Disen Gâge is an eclectic Russian progressive rock band that has been around for years having formed in Moscow in 1999. I only recently became aware of the band after digging into their albums Nature and The Screw, both reviewed on this site. This review delves into their 2006 offering titled Libertâge.

This is a highly eclectic and improvised affair, at times atonal and even melodic in a weird sort of way. The guitar playing and creative musicianship is what sets this band apart from many others as these musicians never compromise their craft. The dual guitar and effects give this music a totally unique sound, it’s not an easy listen but I mean this in a good way. Slow angular guitar builds slowly in the album opening “Entreé� where the band’s creative juices come to the fore. Complex drumming and a myriad of guitar techniques add multiple colours to their sound. More freakish and other worldly guitar work highlights the bizarre “The Crash� and the downright freaky “Attaque De Blindés�, it's a really wild track yet somehow it works.

This album will take you on some unexpected paths with many twists and turns along the way. I suppose that’s what avant-garde music is supposed to do. It’s totally weird but fun at the same time. Another recommended release from R.A.I.G.
