Moore, Steve: Bliss (Soundtrack)

Bliss is a 2019 film about a painter who attempts to find inspiration in drugs, sex, and murder. I haven’t seen the movie, but from what I can tell, things generally don’t end well. The film stills on IMDB don’t reveal very much, but some of them suggest that the movie is dark, dreamlike, and occasionally stylish. Steve Moore’s soundtrack does a great job of introducing tension into the mix by balancing pulsing beats with moments of overwhelming force. Although there are some moments of calm, some of the mellower tracks are fraught with menace. I’m thinking mostly of “Immortal Combat,� a musical cue that knows the value of the slow burn. If you listen to the whole soundtrack in order, you’ll quickly notice that Moore develops a motif of descending notes that give the whole thing a sense of growing instability and madness. You can hear it most clearly at the beginning of “Back to Life,� but there are hints of it elsewhere. Whether you’re new to Moore’s music or an old fan, there’s plenty to enjoy on this release. Moore is a talented composer and this soundtrack shows off his ability to generate sounds that are not only terrifying, but also, occasionally, calm. I suggest listening to “The Bite� or “Murderer� to give you a taste of the whole thing.
