Draper, Terry: In My Garden

After being in a number of bands in the late sixties and early seventies, Terry Draper joined John Woloschuk and Dee Long and formed the band Klaatu. The legendary band is quite an interesting story but I will leave that for another day. I really had no idea what the individual members have been doing since the band broke up in 1982. I was quite surprised to learn that Draper has been consistently releasing albums these last few years so I was quite happy to obtain a copy of In My Garden released in 2019.

The disc contains a number of songs that have been previously released as well as two new tracks. If you like his old band chances are you will find some nice tunes here. Really, this is some irresistible stuff, extremely catchy pop music, professionally played and with a stellar production. Right out of the gate Draper’s hook laden approach can be heard. “I Have A Dream� begins with a lovely piano and as the song develops his melodic sensibility and pop hooks reminded me of The Beatles. With the childlike “Fish� the mood is uplifting, not unlike Ringo Starr’s “Octopus’s Garden�. “Light Years Later� is more heavier and rocking, very sophisticated rock music with another great melody. On “In The Sun� the vibe is light and airy with an island feel while “Everything Will Be Alright� is lushly orchestrated and reminds me a little of his old band. The gentle “I Wish I Could Fly� is another pop gem with an excellent vocal from Draper along with melodic keyboard work. “Latitude Adjustment� is one of the newer tracks and is as catchy as anything on the disc, particularly the vocals and guitar. The entire disc reveals a sophistication that is really quite refreshing and endearing, an album to play during those long summer nights. Recommended.
