Doggy Cats, The: Daikon Pizza

The Doggy Cats is a New York City jazz band specializing in New Orleans inspired horn led jazz and are led by pianist Tetsuro Hoshii. The band’s home away from home is Sunny’s Bar in Brooklyn, where the band play regularly. This is some of the happiest jazz music I have ever had the pleasure of hearing so even if you are not a dancer, your feet will be grooving along to the infectious grooves and melodies. The album opening “Happy Dog” is a prime example of the band’s buoyant and uplifting sound with a fantastic horn arrangement, rollicking piano and an overall carefree and joyous sound. On “Bourgeoisie Breakfast With Dogs” the languid trombone is dutifully matched with another exuberant beat and grooves. “Fatty Catty” and “Old Clock” are both earmarked by superb trombone solos, definitely album highlights. “Dacadandan” is another rousing slice of horn led jazz with fantastic trumpet and saxophone trading solo spots. The band really cooks up a storm on this one. Absolutely on fire.

No matter whether you are a dog lover or a cat lover your ears and feet should be all over Daikon Pizza. Twelve irresistible tracks that will keep you coming back for more. Highly recommended for all fans of post-bop accessible jazz.
