Sound of Ground: Sick

Sound of Ground was a Russian rock band that entered the scene around 2010 and subsequently released three EPs and one full length titled Sky Colored Green (2012). To the best of my knowledge they have since disbanded. This is a review of their 2013 EP titled Sick. This is a band that played some heavy rock. I hear lots of stoner with a bit of ‘90s grunge thrown in for good measure. They have some catchy tunes here and it’s a shame the band are no longer around.

The disc begins with “Anna”, a heavy tune with traces of Nirvana lurking around the edges, especially when the full blown guitar riffs take center stage . The riffs are solid and the lead vocals are gravelly and emotive with the singer able to convey the necessary emotion the music demands. I like the cool elastic like guitar riffs that have a slight ‘70s bent. The chiming guitars and catchy rhythms in “In The Spot” is one of the disc’s melodic high points with the chorus being quite addictive as the lead singers’ acerbic emotional drawl manages to again tug on the ears. The spoken word mixed in works well.

The last track “The Turin Horse” is all huge doomy fuzzed out guitar riffs with sludge and grunge overtones. It’s really about the riff here and its one of the best on the disc.

Sick is an enjoyable listen for those into the sludgier and grimier side of rock and metal. If that’s you check it out.
