Uncle Roy and the Band from Another Planet: Save the Universe

Here is an album that has ‘Do It Yourself’ written all over it. The artist is Uncle Roy and the Band from Another Planet, aka Roy Leonard Herman. Roy plays, sings and composes everything here, a mixture of alternative, psych and space rock and pop. The production quality could have been better but since this is a one man show I will overlook such slight inequities. Overall then, Save The Universe is a pretty cool first offering, an EP of five tracks spread over twenty-four minutes.

The first track “Cosmic Happiness” is indeed very cosmic, a sort of spacey, psychedelic pop joyride, very ethereal and just a little bit trippy. Nice guitar and keyboards throughout with endearing vocals sounding like their projected through a thick psychedelic haze. With “The Isle Of Riff On The World Of Tone” the flow is a little jerky and jarring as the change ups are a bit clumsy and the guitar more piercing. Not as enjoyable as the first track. Softer guitar and psychedelics highlight “A World Of Miracles” which I found to be much more pleasant on the ears. Heavier outbursts of guitar and mellower sounds make “Father Time” pretty interesting although the vocals sound too buried in the mix at times. The disc ends with the psychedelic pop of “It Doesn’t Really Matter”, with its free flowing verses and more intense punk fueled choruses.

Save the Universe is a pretty good disc. With a better production Uncle Roy could really be on to something here, but I suppose that is one of the album’s charms. Check out the link below to learn more.
