Serenity: The Last Knight

Serenity is a band which I used to quite dig but have lost touch with over recent years. I remember seeing them at Manchester Academy 3 supporting Delain. That night they had Lisa Middelhauve singing with them and at one point they had Clémentine Delauney in their ranks. I have always associated them with combining female vocals with those of Georg Neuhauser but now there's little sign of that aspect of the band's former sound. Drummer Andreas Schipflinger and Neuhausr remain the core members of the group and The Last Knight is a solid, if not epoch shattering album.

It probably says something that the best, most exciting piece of music on the album is the near instrumental title track which echoes practically everything Hans Zimmer has ever done but also leads into "Invictus" which is the best actual song on display and sets things up for highs which don't ever really return. Not to say that The Last Knight is a dummy. At times Kamelot and Blind Guardian are invoked although "Queen of Avalon" jumps into a straighter power metal territory and Christopher Bowles might want to check out this one . It's certainly got a fist-pumping chorus and neat guitar work from Chris Hermsdörfer who is in good form throughout but especially on this one and "Down to Hell". The other key track is the super huge ballad "My Farewell" which again is played straight and shows that the guys can write tunes with memorable hooks when they put their minds to it.

The Last Knight is a good album if not a great one. I am sure that there are enough decent tunes on the album to slot into the band's live set and make them even more effective in concert which should certainly see them forge on for at least a while longer.
