A Life Divided: Echoes

This album is the perfect soundtrack to a quiet nighttime drive, the kind that clears your head while you roll on and on, a drive without a map or destination. The album art reinforces this idea with its image of a car’s interior, illuminated by neon, as it glides past a cityscape and its quickly passing lights. Ultimately, most of us probably want music that represents something more than a highway companion, but there’s something familiar about music like this all the same.

Part of this band’s familiar quality comes from the way it soaks everything in the warm, pulsating, sound of 80s-style synthesizers. If you listen to “Enemy,” you’ll hear a good example of what I mean. If you like it, you’re in luck: this whole album sounds like that. The band deliberately turned to the 80s for inspiration on this album and it’s fair to say that everything across as a hybrid of 80s synth music and modern rock. Given that everyone seems to be exploring the 80s these days, you may already be sick of the nostalgic qualities behind this band’s sound. And yet, if you want to hear lively, but not necessarily innovative, music, this may suit your needs. It could also keep you up during a late-night drive.
