Fought Upon Earth: Grave Miscalculation

Fought Upon Erath is a progressive metal band from the San Francisco Bay area and have been laying down the heavy grooves since their formation in 2013. Members Mark Lamb (all guitars and keyboards) and Lance Lea (drums) are from the metal bands Scorched-Earth Policy and Secrets of the Sky respectively, two bands that I am unfamiliar with. They released their self-titled debut in 2015 (reviewed on this site) followed by a short E.P. titled SR-16 Cover Demos in 2017. The band’s sophomore effort Grave Miscalculation was released October 4, 2019.

First things first, this is some heavy stuff. The band lays out an exceptionally heavy barrage of prog metal in the album opening “What You Call Contraband, I Call Saturday Night”. By the way, you got to love that title. The building progressions are supplemented with layered keyboards, a most welcome addition. Equally impressive drums and guitar highlight the prog metal bliss of “Instant Pariah” where again the keyboards add an important dimension to the duo’s sound. Crazy riff patterns and overall stunning musicianship make “Rabies Shower” another fine slice of heavy prog metal. The walls of sound are as heavy as they come. Finally the heaviness lets up with the moody intro to “Could Be Coyotes” although it doesn’t take long for the thick slabs of guitar riffs to break free. Another great track and pretty catchy as well. That’s really what you get with Grave Miscalculation. Heavy progressive metal that will get your blood flowing and your head banging. This is a must purchase for fans of heavy music.
