Oceanica: OneDark

Some of you may be familiar with the UK progressive rock band Enochian Theory. They released three albums, I have their 2009 release titled Creatio Ex Nihilio which I consider a fine album although I haven’t listened to it in quite some time. Anyways, if you liked that band chances are you will appreciate Enochian Theory’s lead man Ben Harris-Hayes’ new project Oceanica and their debut album titled OneDark.

On the album Hayes plays and sings everything himself, except for the occasional female vocals. This album is more about texture and atmosphere than it is about virtuosity, although there is no doubt Hayes is a fine multi-instrumentalist in his own right. This is moody stuff, examples of Katatonia and Anathema come to mind, merging progressive, alternative rock and pop music. The short intro “Youth” begins the disc with a repeating xylophone melody before the album proper begins with “Overcome”, with its addictively catchy vocals and bursting guitar riffs. A kind of proggy alternative sound on this one. “All The Cool Kidz R Doin’ It” is more progressive metal with heavier guitar crunch and cool rhythmic changes. Hayes certainly has some impressive guitar chops. “Amounting To Nothing” is another excellent guitar based rocker is whereas “Oubliette” has a much more textural and moody atmosphere. On the slightly breezy and poppy sounding “Got A Feeling” the melody and vocals are very nice. I hear some Anathema in this one.

Oceanica have made an excellent album with OneDark. Those of you into more moody and atmospheric rock music should certainly check this out. Highly recommended.
