Old Dead Tree, The: The End

This EP marks both the beginning and the end of The Old Dead Tree. Even though the band wrote the music back in 1999, two years after they formed, the suicide of drummer Frédéric Guillemot that same year shook things up in ways that pushed things in different directions. The band went on to release a handful of full-length albums that garnered positive attention and helped secure them coveted spots on tours and at metal festivals. Unfortunately, the band also faced a series of personnel changes and creative differences that ultimately led to a decision to break up. With this release, they pay one final tribute to Guillemot and to say goodbye to their fans.

For those who have followed the band closely, the music on this EP should sound mostly familiar. It definitely showcases the band’s doomier qualities, but it also draws on the Gothic qualities that many people associate with them. To a large extent, the heart of the band is Manuel Munoz, whose vocals range from a soaring clarity to a disturbing growl. Not everyone will like the clean vocals, but there’s no denying Munoz’s singing talents. The emotional qualities he brings make this EP a fitting end to the band’s career.

For those who haven’t heard The Old Dead Tree, I’d suggest checking out “Raise” or “The End Again” to see what you think.
