James Martin is an American saxophonist/composer with three albums to his credit including his latest titled Keep Movin’. Martin is a wonderfully melodic player as the feel good grooves come through in every track, all original compositions penned by Martin. Martin mostly stays in the R&B and funk areas with some touches of jazz and soul. These are upbeat, fun tracks that will surely light a fire under your feet.
The disc begins with “Out the Gate”, starting slowly with a western movie soundtrack flavour before breaking out into a funky R&B groove. A completely infectious body shaker if there ever was one. More bluesy R&B can be heard on the excellent “Rectify”, the sax is slow and sultry and the piano solo is pure quality. Vocally, Michael McDonald or Stevie Wonder comes to mind. His voice is smooth and soulful, a really good fit for the band’s mixture of soul, funk and R&B. More funky beats can be heard in the toe tapping “Young Ambition” while the tastiest groove might be in the title track which also includes a searing guitar solo from Josh Starkman. Another highlight has to be the organ solo in the fine instrumental “Exit Signs”.
In a nutshell, Martin and his band have made one of the more tuneful albums of 2019. Very enjoyable indeed.
