Surgical Strike: Part of a Sick World
The good thing and the bad thing about the album art for this release is that could apply to yesterday, today, and tomorrow. I say it’s a bad thing, not because I don’t like the art, but because it’s just so accurate. There’s no easy escape from all the craziness out there and I often feel like the guy of the cover whose face is a mix of anxiety, rage, and confusion.
Fortunately, there are bands like Surgical Strike that channel all those emotions into thrashy goodness. For those unfamiliar with the band, this is their first album even though they’ve technically been active since the mid-1990s. From the beginning, the band focused on creating thrash that would stand up against the titans of the genre. I’ll leave it up to others to decide how well they do, but it’s obvious to me that Surgical Strike is heavy, aggressive, and uncompromising. From start to finish, the band delivers the goods. The music on this album is consistently solid, but I especially enjoyed “Politicians” and “Sorrow of War.” I thought the guitar work on “Politicians” was clean and fast. There were also some really impressive dual-guitar passages. “Sorrow of War” was a little more drum heavy and had just the kind of driving force you’d expect from a song about the horrors of warfare. That song also had a little extra rawness that I enjoyed. I’d also suggest checking out the title track, one of the best examples of the band thrashing at the highest speeds while also highlighting clean and solid leads.
This is an impressive debut from a band to watch.
