Klampanis, Petros: Irrationalities

Here is a culturally and musically diverse trio to dig into. Greek born bassist Petros Klampanis, who lives in both his native country and New York, along with Polish born Bodek Janke (drums and percussion) and Estonian born Kristjan Randalu (piano) have one of the more creative trio offerings I have heard this year titled Irrationalities.

The album begins with the complex and melodic “Easy Come Easy Go� beginning with swirling piano lines that intermingle with the drums and bass. The bass takes a turn near the front of the mix before taking on a more nuanced role. The solo bass is exceptional. The piano at the start of “Seeing You Behind My Eyes� is a little somber and sentimental. A nice groove settles in with brief flashes of tasty bass figures and as the piano and bass dance within the soundscape the drumming of Janke really heats up. The short “Temporary Secret III� begins with the sounds of a rail station, or perhaps a subway as a siren fades into the distance. A complex vocal arrangement marks the beginning of “Irrationality�, starting mellow with lovely piano and mesmerizing bass work before the trio really starts to sizzle. The band transitions between fast and slow with exceptional clarity.

Irrationalities is both complex and highly nuanced, played with an exquisite attention to detail and with a musical virtuosity that is not often heard. Highly recommended.
