Erskine, Peter/George Garzone/Alan Pasqua/Darek Oles: 3 Nights In L.A.

What do you get when you put four world class jazz musicians together in the same room? Absolute magic. On January 17th, 18th and 19th Peter Erskine (drums) George Garzone (tenor saxophone), Alan Pasqua (piano) and Darek Oles (bass) played three nights of incredible jazz at the Sam First nightclub in Los Angeles. This CD is a six track review sampler from the three CD set titled 3 Nights In L.A.

It’s always something special when musicians of this caliber get together and strut their stuff. There is a familiarity between them, each one seemingly knowing where the others will go, at least that’s what it seems like. Fantastic improvising and in the pocket playing is what you get on these five tracks. Just remember, this is a small sampling of the music spread across three CDs.

On the first track “Have You Met Miss Jones?” a mesmerizing saxophone solo is cushioned by a sinuous backbone of bass and drums while piano fills in the gaps. Piano and bass solos follow suit as Erskine’s complex fills and wonderful cymbal work round out the piece. Great band interplay highlights “Twelve” as Erskine’s nuanced drums and Oles’s light as a feather bass highlight the quartet’s more subtle moments. The old school sounding jazz of “The Honeymoon” swings with pure joy and includes more excellent sax and piano solos followed by “It Will Happen To You”, another throwback to a bygone era. Garzone’s saxophone work is wildly imaginative as the band gets its groove on. Absolutely wonderful stuff.

Judging from these six tracks I can only imagine how good the three CDs would sound. A must hear for all jazz fans.
