Lord Vapour: Semuta

The quality psyche and stoner rock keeps on coming, with this latest band in my listening que hailing from the Isle of Guernsey, located in the English Channel. The three piece consists of Christian Mariess (drums), Henry Fears (guitar) and Joe Le Long (bass and vocals). Their latest titled Semuta is their fourth album. This is another band completely new to me.

Heavy psychedelic rock, stoner rock, doom metal, all with a bluesy tinge is what this band is all about. The gravelly lead vocals, sometimes quite intense yet always catchy are a near perfect match for the music. Speaking of music, here it is all about the grooves and riffs. The guitar playing, both lead and rhythm is highlighted in every track. I love the psychedelic/bluesy tinged soloing throughout the album. The riffs are heavy and razor like and the beats settle in with some great grooves like in the ‘70s influenced “Burning Planet�. Joe Le Long’s gravelly yet melodic drawl reminds me somewhat of Mastodon’s vocal approach. Heavy blues rock and psych with pummeling drums and ripping guitar solos as well as slow doomy riffs makes “The Spice� an excellent track. The galloping riffs are superb. “Through The Door Of Kukundu� is another stunner with hard rock sounds and fantastic guitar licks.

For those into heavier hard rock sounds Lord Vapour is a must hear and Semuta should be absolutely mandatory. A Ripple Music release.
