Pale Grey Lore: Eschatology

Pale Grey Lore is a stoner rock band hailing from Columbus, Ohio. They released their self-titled debut in 2016 and their sophomore effort titled Eschatology came out in September of this year.

First a little bit on the concept. The album title, in theological terms refers to humanity’s fate. The album tells the story of a planet devoid of resources, completely stripped by its inhabitants and ravaged by nuclear war and a climate in crisis. The wealthy industrialists, those who mainly contributed to the planet’s destruction leave the planet in spaceships only to succumb to the harsh realities of space. Then the aliens come and transform half the planet with lush vegetation and exotic creatures, leaving the other half as is, a post-apocalyptic world. There is something about a cosmic rift and ancient time lines but I will leave that up to you to explore if you so choose. You just gotta love sci-fi concepts.

The music is similar to what I’ve heard before in the genre but that doesn’t take anything away from the fact that Eschatology is a treat for the ears. Moody and darker tinged acoustic guitar begin the opening track “Sunken Cities”, a vibe edged in darkness and slightly ominous. Muted fuzzed out guitar riffs begin with vocals set in the distance, a common effect throughout the album and it works very well. Just a fine melodic and catchy opening tune. The riffs are heavy right from the start in “”Greed Springs Eternal” with its excellent guitar break including a fuzz drenched solo. Heavy feedback and distorted riffs begin “Before The Fall” featuring twisting guitar lines and superb Ozzy-like lead vocals. The Sabbath-like riffs in “Regicide” and the acoustic psychedelic flavourings in “Waiting for the Dawn” are more highlights.

Pale Grey Lore have made a wonderful stoner rock album with Eschatology, a highly recommended release for rock enthusiasts across the board.
