Junkpile Jimmy: “Wants You Dead”

You won’t find many details about Junkpile Jimmy online. The duo’s Bandcamp page simply states, “Heavy slide guitar from inland SoCal,” and our CD copy arrived with a handwritten two-sided sheet explaining that ”Wants You Dead” was “recorded 2004-2005, then shelved. Many years later, prepared for release.”

And there you have it.

Attributed only to drummer JMac and guitarist/vocalist Junkpile, this warped and wayward record opens with “Existential Dread (Intro),” featuring somber percussion set to sinister whispering and misleading listeners into thinking ”Wants You Dead” will be a low-fi excursion into experimental shenanigans. Instead, the song erupts into a black-metal frenzy that segues into the charred thrash-punk of “Shed Blood Total War.” From there, the adventurous album continues its aural assault, with sludgy production and slithering, impossibly rapid-fire vocals with plenty of really well played slide guitar and bizarre yet compelling interludes that evoke images of ancient rituals and haunted jungles.

But with a running time of more than 40 minutes, this all can be a bit too much. By the time "Wants You Dead" is over, you’ll feel as if -- as the album title suggests -- you'll want to die.
