Benegas, Adrian: The Revenant
I'm not overly familiar with Mr. Benegas, however, this album features Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear), Herbie Langhans (Radiant, Avantasia) and Henning Basse (Firewind) on vocals. The single and accompanying video for the track "Servants Of The Death" featuring Ralf Scheepers is actually one of the weakest moments on the album. Before I comment further let's fill you in on the main man himself.
Adrian Benegas, composer, keyboardist and entrepreneur, was born in March 1, 1989 in Asuncion, Paraguay. Mostly known for being the founder of the international metal project Tragul. He started his career into music when he created his first metal project called Pergana back in 2008 which released two EP's. In 2015, he founded Abracadabra, a symphonic metal project featuring Emilie Ragni (Luca Turilli) on vocals. Abracadabra released two EPs, Forbidden Magic (2015) and Samhain Night(2016). If that isn't enough he has apparently unleashed eight singles in the last two years! A busy man indeed. Diego BogarÃn on guitars and bass, Seba Ramirez hits the drums and Rhapsody's Alex Holzwarth drums on track 5 to complete the musicians on the album alongside third vocalist Herbie Langhans.
Initially I couldn't get a grip on the album. I even considered sneakily ignoring it, however, repeated listens have revealed a layered, musically complex yet accessible album. It's rather bombastic in places ("Face to Face", for example) but not overly so and everything is underpinned by the keyboards of Mr. Benegas himself. Much of it is played at DragonForce speed but this adds to the intensity. The riffs are loud and crunchy throughout and if anything, despite Benegas' keyboard prowess the guitar work might just be the highlight. Zuberoa Aznárez adds female vocals on three tracks to complete a satisfying musical palette.
