Intergalactic Huso Orchestra: Spaced Out

The Intergalactic Huso Orchestra is the Finnish duo of Jari Riitala (bass, keys, lead and rhythm guitars, percussion) and Jimbo Mäkeläinen (drums). Their first disc titled Spaced Out was released in May of this year and a fine progressive fusion album it is.

Over the years both musicians have been in a number of bands since the eighties including Oktoplus, a band common to both of them. Their vast experience is easily heard throughout the disc’s twelve tracks beginning with the trippy “Nebula Risa I”. Wisps of percussion, keyboards and guitar float on the expansive space-like soundscape. The pace quickens with the next track “Afternoon Romp”, having a kind of fusion funk like groove. Excellent guitar work is highlighted throughout. Ethereal tones, mostly by e-bow guitar (sounding very much like synths as pointed out in the liner notes) gives “Time For A Change” plenty of atmosphere. The propulsive beat and stabs of keyboards are pretty catchy and the tasty fretwork is again a highlight. The fluid guitar harmonies in “Odour In Court” are smooth and dynamic while “Nebula Risa II” is an otherworldly exploration of spacey sounds combined with jazzy trombone and sweet guitar work. The beat and groove is absolutely infectious. The flute solo by Bill Lieske provides more tasty fare.

Spaced Out is a highly listenable slice of fusion that I can easily recommend to any fan of the genre. The guitar and drum work are particularly impressive.
