Battersea: Arguments & Sentiments
Battersea hail not from that district in London from which this band take their name but the Netherlands, so whether they’re alluding to the monolithic presence of the power station made famous by Pink Floyd with their chosen moniker, who knows? But if they are it certainly doesn’t show on an album where clipped pop-rock with a few indie guitar moments and Americana overtones takes centre stage.
“To Ithaca” introduces Arguments & Sentiments and it does a fine job, what with its catchy chorus and easy melody digging deep into the memory and happily taking up residence there. The title track follows that opening announcement and along with “The Light” shows the ability to maintain the early promise. Taken on face value the standard never really dips from there, “A Sound” dropping down a gear or two to try and add some drama, while “Chide” adds an otherworldly touch that looks to add an air of maturity. However, as you journey through this eleven track, 45 minute album, it’s difficult not to lose focus and begin to zone out, the uneasy feeling that by the halfway point you might just have discovered everything that Arguments & Sentiments has at its heart, just too adhesive to shake off. With the tone and atmosphere barely altering from song to song and the guitar sound pretty much fixed, the lack of compositional variance comes into all too stark focus.
That aside though, there’s no denying that Battersea know how to snag a hook and construct a chorus and while they don’t always end up with something quite as upbeat and punchy as I’m guessing they think they do, there are still a few moments that really shine. If they can begin to master the art of shaping each of their compositions into a more individual stand-out display, then the Battersea spark that is undoubtedly struck on occasion might just burst into a much brighter flame.
