Salem’s Bend: Supercluster

Heavy rockers Salem’s Bend released their self titled debut in 2016. The Los Angeles band’s sophomore effort titled Supercluster came out in May of this year and for fans of heavy music this is a must listen. The power three piece consists of Zach Huling (drums), Bobby Parker (guitars, vocals) and Kevin Schofield (bass, backing vocals).

Man oh man, this is a fine album that oozes ‘70s hard rock. This is real music, their passion and love for doom, stoner and heavy music in general is laid out there for anyone to latch onto. Just listen to the heavy Sabbath inspired doominess of “Thinking Evil” and tell me this band doesn’t love what they’re doing. The riffs crawl with an inner power, the vocals are sung with emotion and the rhythm section plays with both fervor and restraint. Really, every track is strong so it’s hard to pick favourites. The album opening “Spaceduster” with its addictive riffs, vocals and groove will pummel you senseless (meant in a good way) and the driving hard rock of “Catamount” is an excellent rocker. More high points include the galloping bass line in “Show Me The Witch”, the trippy atmospheres in the instrumental “Winds Of Ganymede” and the acoustic intricacies in the album ending “Infinite Horizon”.

Salem’s Bend have really outdone themselves with Supercluster. A defining statement from the band and its only their second album. Let’s hope they stick around for album number three. Another fine release courtesy of Ripple Music.
